BMW suspension upgrade guide - coilovers vs lowering springs vs air suspension
Suspension is one of the most impactful mods you can do. Here's my breakdown after trying all three options.
Lowering springs
The budget option. Drop 20-30mm, stiffer spring rate, keeps stock dampers. Good for daily drivers who want a better look and slightly improved handling.
Pros: Cheap (200-400 EUR), easy install, keeps stock ride quality mostly
Cons: Stock dampers wear faster, limited adjustability, can be bouncy
Best brands: H&R, Eibach, Bilstein B12 kit (springs + dampers)
Coilovers
Full replacement of springs and dampers. Adjustable height, and on better kits, adjustable damping.
Pros: Full adjustability, better handling, can set corner weights
Cons: Expensive (800-3000 EUR), ride quality depends on brand, need alignment after install
Best brands:
- Budget: BC Racing, Solowerks
- Mid: KW V1/V2, Bilstein B14/B16
- High-end: KW V3, Ohlins Road & Track, AST 5100
Air suspension
Adjustable ride height at the push of a button. Popular for show cars and daily drivers who want the best of both worlds.
Pros: Adjustable on the fly, can go low for shows and raise for speed bumps
Cons: Very expensive (2000-5000 EUR), complex install, potential reliability issues
Best brands: Air Lift Performance, Airrex
My recommendation
For most people: KW V2 coilovers. Perfect balance of performance, comfort, and adjustability. I've had them on my F30 for 3 years and they're still perfect.
