BMW AdBlue / SCR System — How It Works
What Is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a urea-based solution (32.5% urea in demineralized water) injected into the exhaust system to reduce NOx emissions. It's required on all Euro 6 BMW diesel engines.
How SCR Works
- AdBlue injection — A metering unit sprays AdBlue into the exhaust stream before the SCR catalyst
- Hydrolysis — Heat converts urea into ammonia (NH3)
- SCR catalyst — Ammonia reacts with NOx on the catalyst surface
- Result — NOx is converted to harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O)
System Components
- AdBlue tank — typically 15-20 liters, located under the trunk or rear seat
- AdBlue pump/metering unit — pressurizes and injects AdBlue
- Injector nozzle — sprays AdBlue into exhaust
- SCR catalyst — where the chemical reaction occurs
- NOx sensors — before and after SCR catalyst, monitor effectiveness
- Temperature sensors — monitor exhaust temp for injection timing
- AdBlue level sensor — monitors tank level
Common Problems
1. AdBlue Crystallization
- AdBlue can crystallize in the injector nozzle or exhaust pipe
- Cause: Short trips (system doesn't get hot enough), low-quality AdBlue
- Symptoms: SCR fault codes, reduced power, AdBlue warning
- Fix: Clean or replace injector nozzle, use quality AdBlue
2. AdBlue Pump/Metering Unit Failure
- Electric pump fails
- Symptoms: AdBlue warning, "X km to engine restart not possible"
- Fix: Replace metering unit (~€500-1,000)
3. NOx Sensor Failure
- Sensors degrade over time
- Symptoms: SCR efficiency codes, AdBlue consumption changes
- Fix: Replace sensor (~€200-400)
4. AdBlue Heater Failure
- AdBlue freezes at -11°C, so the system has heaters
- If heater fails in cold weather, system can't function
- Fix: Replace heater element
5. "Engine Restart Not Possible" Warning
- If AdBlue runs out or the system detects a fault, BMW will eventually prevent engine restart
- This is a legal requirement (emissions compliance)
- Never ignore AdBlue warnings
Maintenance
- Refill AdBlue every 10,000-15,000 km (consumption varies)
- Use ISO 22241 certified AdBlue only
- Don't use agricultural urea or other substitutes
- AdBlue has a shelf life of ~12 months — don't stockpile
- Keep the filler cap clean — contamination damages the system
