BMW Fuel Economy Tips — How to Get Better MPG from Your BMW
BMW Fuel Economy Tips
BMWs aren't known for sipping fuel, but there's a lot you can do to improve economy without sacrificing the driving experience.
Driving Habits (Biggest Impact)
1. Use Eco Pro Mode
Eco Pro mode adjusts throttle response, transmission shift points, and climate control for maximum efficiency. Real-world savings: 10-20%.
2. Anticipate Traffic
Look ahead and coast to slow down instead of braking at the last moment. Every time you brake, you're converting fuel into heat.
3. Smooth Acceleration
You don't have to accelerate like a grandma, but jackrabbit starts waste fuel. Moderate, steady acceleration is most efficient.
4. Maintain Speed
Constant speed is more efficient than speeding up and slowing down. Use cruise control on the highway.
5. Optimal Highway Speed
Aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with speed:
- 100 km/h: Baseline
- 120 km/h: ~20% more drag
- 140 km/h: ~45% more drag
- 160 km/h: ~80% more drag
Dropping from 140 to 120 km/h can improve fuel economy by 15-20%.
Maintenance (Moderate Impact)
6. Tire Pressure
Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance. Check monthly. BMW's recommended pressures are on the door jamb sticker. Adding 2-3 PSI above recommended (for highway driving) can improve economy slightly.
7. Fresh Oil
Old, thick oil creates more friction. Regular oil changes with the correct viscosity (0W-30 for most BMWs) reduce internal friction.
8. Clean Air Filter
A clogged air filter restricts airflow, reducing efficiency. Replace every 20,000-30,000 km.
9. Spark Plugs
Worn plugs cause incomplete combustion. Fresh plugs improve efficiency by 2-5%.
10. Alignment
Misaligned wheels create drag. A proper alignment can improve economy by 3-5%.
Hardware (Smaller Impact)
11. Remove Unnecessary Weight
Every 50 kg of extra weight costs ~1% fuel economy. Clean out the trunk.
12. Remove Roof Racks When Not in Use
Roof racks and boxes create significant aerodynamic drag. Remove them when not needed.
13. Use the Right Fuel
Premium fuel burns more efficiently in engines designed for it. Using regular fuel actually reduces economy (DME retards timing).
