BMW Getrag Manual Transmissions — GS5 and GS6 Guide
Overview
BMW has used Getrag manual transmissions across most of its lineup. The two main families are the GS5 (5-speed) and GS6 (6-speed).
GS6-37BZ / GS6-53BZ (6-Speed)
Used in: E46 330i, E90 335i, E82 135i, F30 335i
Specifications:
- 6 forward gears + reverse
- Torque capacity: 370-530 Nm depending on variant
- Synchromesh on all forward gears
- Dual-mass flywheel (DMF)
Common Issues:
1. Clutch Delay Valve (CDV)
- BMW installed a restriction valve in the clutch hydraulic line to smooth engagement
- Makes the clutch feel vague and slow
- Fix: CDV delete — remove the valve for direct clutch feel. Simple 30-minute job.
2. Dual-Mass Flywheel Failure
- DMF absorbs drivetrain vibrations but wears over time
- Symptoms: Rattling at idle, vibration in neutral
- Fix: Replace DMF (~€400-800) or convert to single-mass flywheel (SMF)
3. Shift Linkage Bushings
- Rubber bushings in the shift linkage wear, causing sloppy shifts
- Fix: Replace with polyurethane bushings (~€20-50)
4. Input Shaft Bearing
- Can develop noise on high-mileage cars
- Symptoms: Whining in neutral that goes away when clutch is pressed
- Fix: Bearing replacement (requires transmission removal)
Fluid & Maintenance
- Fluid type: BMW MTF-LT-2 or Redline MT-90
- Change interval: Every 60,000 km
- Capacity: ~1.5-1.8 liters
- Fresh fluid makes a dramatic difference in shift quality
