BMW Key Fob Not Working? Every Possible Cause and Fix
BMW Key Fob Not Working? Every Cause and Fix
You press the button and nothing happens. Before you panic, work through this list.
The Easy Fixes
Dead Battery (90% of cases)
The most common cause by far.
- Battery type: CR2032 (most models) or CR2450
- Lifespan: 2-3 years
- How to open: Small slot on the side of the fob — use a flat screwdriver or coin
- Cost: €2-5 for a battery
Out of Range
BMW key fobs have a range of about 30-50 meters. Walls, interference, and low battery reduce this.
Key Fob Needs Re-Sync
Sometimes the key loses sync with the car.
- Fix: Hold the key against the steering column (where the key slot is) and press start. This uses the backup RFID chip.
- Then lock/unlock the car normally — this re-syncs the RF.
The Medium Fixes
Comfort Access Antenna Failure
If the buttons work but keyless entry doesn't:
- Door handle antenna may have failed
- Interior antenna may have failed
- Fix: Replace antenna module — €100-300
Key Fob Internal Damage
- Water damage (dropped in water, washed in laundry)
- Physical damage (dropped, sat on)
- Fix: Key fob replacement — €200-400 at dealer, must be programmed
CAS Module Issue
The Car Access System authenticates the key.
- Symptoms: Key not recognized, no start, EWS fault
- Fix: CAS repair or replacement — €300-800
The Emergency Start
If your key fob is completely dead but you need to start the car:
E-Series (E46, E90, etc.)
- Insert the physical key blade into the ignition
- Turn to start
F/G-Series (F30, G20, etc.)
- Hold the key fob against the steering column (near the start button)
- Press the start button
- The car reads the passive RFID chip in the key — no battery needed
Getting a Replacement Key
- Dealer: €200-400, programmed on the spot
- Locksmith: €150-300, may not have all key types
- Used key from eBay: Don't. It won't work without being programmed to your car's CAS/FEM, and programming requires the original key or dealer access.
How Many Keys Can a BMW Have?
Most BMWs support up to 4 keys. You can check how many are programmed using ISTA. If you've lost a key, you should delete it from the system to prevent theft.
