BMW Z3 M roadster S52 — track day prep and suspension upgrades

Just bought a 1999 Z3 M Roadster with the S52 engine (240hp US spec). The car is in great mechanical condition with 95k km but the suspension is completely stock and feels very soft for track use. Planning to use it for track days and spirited mountain road driving. Here is my planned mod list: Suspension: - Bilstein PSS10 coilovers or BC Racing BR series? - Rear subframe reinforcement plates (heard the Z3 M has weak rear subframe mounting points) - Adjustable rear camber arms - Polyurethane bushings throughout Brakes: - StopTech slotted rotors - EBC Yellowstuff pads - Stainless steel brake lines - Fresh DOT 4 fluid The S52 engine I plan to leave stock for now — 240hp in a 1350kg car is already plenty. Maybe a tune and exhaust later. Anyone running a Z3 M on track? What suspension setup works best? Budget is around 3000 EUR for suspension and brakes combined.

Great platform for track days. I run a Z3 2.8 on track and the chassis is incredibly balanced. For the M Roadster, the rear subframe reinforcement is absolutely critical — do this before anything else. The S52/S54 torque will crack the rear subframe mounting points, especially under hard cornering. Reinforcement plates cost about 200 EUR and welding is another 300-400 EUR. Do not skip this. For coilovers, the Bilstein PSS10 is the better choice for a street/track car. The BC Racing BR series is good value but the Bilstein damper quality is noticeably better — less harshness over bumps while still being firm enough for track use. Set the front at -2.5 degrees camber and the rear at -1.8 degrees for a good starting point. One upgrade you did not mention: a front strut tower brace. The Z3 chassis flexes quite a bit and a strut brace makes a noticeable difference in turn-in response. The OEM M Roadster brace is the best option — find one used for about 150 EUR.

I track my Z3 M Coupe (S54 engine) regularly. The Z3 M platform is one of the best-kept secrets in the BMW track day world — lightweight, rear-wheel drive, short wheelbase, and a fantastic engine. The S52 is bulletproof and will take abuse all day long. For brakes, skip the EBC Yellowstuff — they are fine for street but fade quickly on track. Go with Hawk DTC-60 or Ferodo DS2500 for a street/track compound. The Z3 M brakes are actually quite good stock — the rotors are 315mm front which is adequate. Just upgrade the pads and fluid and you will be fine. One thing to watch on track: the Z3 M has a tendency to lift the inside rear wheel under hard cornering. A limited slip diff upgrade makes a huge difference — the stock open diff (if you have one) is the biggest weakness. The OEM LSD from the E36 M3 is a direct bolt-in and can be found used for 500-800 EUR.
