G32 630i GT — practical family BMW with surprising tuning potential

I know the 6 Series GT gets a lot of hate for its looks, but hear me out. The G32 630i with the B48 engine is an incredibly practical car with genuine tuning potential. Stock: 258hp, 400Nm from the B48 2.0L turbo After stage 1 remap: approximately 300hp, 440Nm The car is huge inside — more boot space than a 5 Series Touring and the rear seats recline. For family road trips it is perfect. And with the stage 1 tune, it has enough power to not feel sluggish despite weighing 1.8 tons. The B48 engine is the same unit found in the 330i, X3 30i, and Z4 30i. All the same tuning options apply — BM3, MHD, JB4 all support it. The ZF 8HP gearbox also benefits from a TCU tune. Yes, it is not the prettiest BMW ever made. But for a practical family car that can also be tuned to 300hp, it is hard to beat the value proposition. Clean used examples are available for 25-30k EUR.

The 6 Series GT is massively underrated. I have the 630d with the B57 engine — 286hp stock and with a stage 1 remap it pushes 340hp with over 700Nm torque. The car weighs 1.9 tonnes but it does not feel heavy at all with that kind of torque. The air suspension on the rear gives a fantastic ride quality, much better than the G30 5 Series with standard springs. Boot space is enormous — 610 litres with the seats up. Perfect long-distance cruiser. Only downside is the looks — people either love or hate the rear end design.

Had a G32 640i xDrive GT as a company car for 2 years. The B58 in the 640i is the sweet spot — 340hp stock and incredibly smooth. Fuel consumption was around 9L/100km on highway which is acceptable for a car this size. The panoramic roof is massive and makes the interior feel very airy. One thing to watch: the frameless doors can develop wind noise around 150km/h if the window seals wear. BMW will replace under warranty but out of warranty it is about 400 EUR per door. Overall a brilliant car that depreciates hard — great used bargain.
