X7 M60i S68 mild hybrid V8 — luxury yacht with 530hp, tuning options?

Just took delivery of a 2025 X7 M60i with the new S68 4.4L twin turbo V8 with 48V mild hybrid. Stock output is 530hp and 750Nm. The car weighs 2.7 tons but still does 0-100 in 4.7 seconds. The S68 is the successor to the N63/S63 family and addresses many of the reliability concerns of the older engines. The turbos are still in the hot V position but BMW has improved the cooling and oil management significantly. My question is about tuning potential. The S68 has a 48V mild hybrid system integrated into the engine management. Does this complicate ECU tuning? Are there any tuners offering maps for the S68 yet? I have seen some companies claiming stage 1 gains of 50-80hp on the S68, bringing it to around 600hp. But I want to make sure the tune works properly with the mild hybrid system and does not cause any issues. Also interested in exhaust options. The stock exhaust is very quiet — too quiet for a V8 in my opinion. Looking for something with more presence but not obnoxious. Any recommendations for the X7?

The S68 is still relatively new so tuning options are limited compared to the N63/S63. BM3 and MHD are both working on S68 support but full stage 1 maps are not widely available yet. A few custom tuners are offering maps on a case-by-case basis. The 48V mild hybrid system does add complexity to the tune. The electric motor assists during acceleration and the ECU manages the interaction between the combustion engine and electric motor. A proper tune needs to account for this integration. For exhaust, Eisenmann and Akrapovic both offer systems for the X7 M60i. The Akrapovic titanium system is lighter and sounds incredible but costs 5000+ EUR. The Eisenmann is more affordable at around 2500 EUR and still sounds great.

I have experience with the S68 in the XM and the tuning potential is definitely there. The engine responds well to increased boost pressure and the 48V system actually helps with low-end torque delivery. For the exhaust, I would also look at Remus. They make a sport exhaust for the X7 M60i with valve control — so you can have it quiet in comfort mode and loud in sport mode. Best of both worlds. Price is around 3000 EUR installed. The S68 should prove more reliable than the N63/S63 it replaces. BMW has learned from the hot V issues and the cooling system is much improved. But it is still early days — we will know more about long-term reliability in a few years.
