BMW B57 Diesel — Modern Six-Cylinder Turbodiesel

Overview

The B57 is BMW's modular 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel, replacing the N57 from 2016. Part of the same modular family as B48/B58.

Variants:

  • B57D30: Single turbo, 265 hp (530d)
  • B57D30S0: Quad turbo, 400 hp (M550d — yes, four turbos)
  • B57D30O1: Twin turbo, 340 hp (540d)

Key Improvements over N57

  • Modular architecture (shared with B58)
  • Aluminum block (lighter)
  • Higher injection pressure (2,500 bar)
  • Improved emissions (Euro 6d)
  • Better NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)

The Quad-Turbo M550d

The B57D30S0 uses four turbochargers:

  • 2 low-pressure turbos
  • 2 high-pressure turbos
  • Sequential operation for seamless boost delivery
  • 400 hp and 760 Nm — supercar-fast diesel

Common Issues

  • DPF with city driving (same as all diesels)
  • AdBlue system faults
  • EGR valve clogging (improved over N57)
  • Turbo actuator issues on quad-turbo variant

Applications

  • 2016+ BMW 530d/540d (G30)
  • 2016+ BMW 730d/740d (G11)
  • 2016+ BMW X5 30d/40d (G05)
  • 2016+ BMW M550d (G30) — quad turbo

The B57 is the ultimate diesel cruiser engine — massive torque with BMW refinement.
