BMW N46 Engine — Budget Four-Cylinder with Valvetronic

Overview

The N46 is BMW's 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with Valvetronic, produced 2004-2011. It powered entry-level 1 and 3 Series models.

Specifications (N46B20):

  • Displacement: 1,995 cc
  • Power: 129-170 hp depending on variant
  • Torque: 180-210 Nm
  • Features: Valvetronic, Double-VANOS

Common Problems

1. Eccentric Shaft Sensor Failure

  • Controls Valvetronic system
  • Symptoms: Rough idle, loss of power, Valvetronic faults
  • Fix: Replace sensor (~€100-200)

2. Timing Chain Rattle

  • Chain tensioner can fail on high-mileage units
  • Symptoms: Rattling on cold start
  • Less severe than N20/N47 but still a concern above 150,000 km

3. Oil Consumption

  • Some N46 engines consume oil
  • Piston ring design allows oil past
  • Monitor oil level between services

4. VANOS Solenoids

  • Standard BMW VANOS wear
  • Fix: Replace solenoids

Applications

  • 2004-2011 BMW 318i, 320i (E90/E91)
  • 2004-2011 BMW 118i, 120i (E87)
  • 2005-2011 BMW X1 18i, 20i (E84)

The N46 is a basic, economical engine. Not exciting but adequate for daily driving. The N20 turbo that replaced it is more powerful but less reliable.
