Overview
The N46 is BMW's 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with Valvetronic, produced 2004-2011. It powered entry-level 1 and 3 Series models.
Specifications (N46B20):
- Displacement: 1,995 cc
- Power: 129-170 hp depending on variant
- Torque: 180-210 Nm
- Features: Valvetronic, Double-VANOS
Common Problems
1. Eccentric Shaft Sensor Failure
- Controls Valvetronic system
- Symptoms: Rough idle, loss of power, Valvetronic faults
- Fix: Replace sensor (~€100-200)
2. Timing Chain Rattle
- Chain tensioner can fail on high-mileage units
- Symptoms: Rattling on cold start
- Less severe than N20/N47 but still a concern above 150,000 km
3. Oil Consumption
- Some N46 engines consume oil
- Piston ring design allows oil past
- Monitor oil level between services
4. VANOS Solenoids
- Standard BMW VANOS wear
- Fix: Replace solenoids

The N46 is a basic, economical engine. Not exciting but adequate for daily driving. The N20 turbo that replaced it is more powerful but less reliable.
