Overview
The N57 is BMW's 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel, produced 2008-2020. It's the diesel counterpart to the N55 petrol engine and is known for excellent torque, refinement, and fuel economy.
Variants:
- N57D30: Single turbo, 245 hp, 540 Nm (530d)
- N57D30S1: Triple turbo, 381 hp, 740 Nm (M550d)
- N57D30O1: Twin turbo, 313 hp, 630 Nm (535d)
Strengths

Common Problems
1. Swirl Flap Issues
- Intake swirl flaps can fail and get ingested
- Solution: Swirl flap delete blanking plates
2. DPF Clogging
- City driving causes DPF issues
- Solution: Regular highway driving, forced regen if needed
3. EGR Valve Failure
- EGR valve clogs with carbon
- Symptoms: Reduced power, rough idle
- Fix: Clean or replace EGR
4. Turbo Actuator Failure (VGT)
- Variable geometry turbo actuator can fail
- Symptoms: Limp mode, boost faults
- Fix: Actuator replacement or turbo rebuild
5. Injector Seal Leaks
- Copper injector seals weep
- Black carbon deposits around injectors
- Fix: Replace copper seals
