BMW Comfort Access — How Keyless Entry Works
What Is Comfort Access?
Comfort Access is BMW's keyless entry and start system. With the key fob in your pocket, you can unlock the car by touching the door handle and start the engine by pressing the start button — without ever taking the key out.
How It Works
Unlocking
- Antennas in the door handles emit a low-frequency (LF) signal
- When you touch the handle, the system sends a wake-up signal
- The key fob receives the LF signal and responds with a UHF signal
- The car verifies the key's encrypted response
- Doors unlock
Starting
- Interior antennas verify the key is inside the car
- You press the start/stop button
- The CAS/FEM authenticates the key
- Engine starts
Locking
- Touch the ribbed area on the door handle exterior
- Or press the lock button on the handle (some models)
- Trunk can be opened by waving your foot under the rear bumper (if equipped)
Common Problems
1. Door Handle Sensor Failure
- Capacitive sensor in the handle stops responding
- Symptoms: Must use key button to unlock, comfort access intermittent
- Fix: Replace door handle or sensor module (~€100-300)
2. Key Fob Battery
- Low battery causes intermittent comfort access failure
- Battery type: CR2032 (most models) or CR2450
- Replace every 2-3 years
3. Antenna Module Failure
- Interior or exterior antenna modules can fail
- Symptoms: Key not detected in certain areas of the car
- Fix: Replace antenna module
4. Relay Attack Theft
- Thieves use signal amplifiers to extend the key fob's range
- Your key is inside your house, but the amplifier makes the car think it's next to the door
- Prevention:
- Store keys in a Faraday pouch/bag
- Use the key fob's motion sensor sleep mode (double-press lock)
- Some newer BMWs have UWB (Ultra-Wideband) that prevents relay attacks
Retrofitting Comfort Access
Comfort Access can be retrofitted on many BMWs that didn't come with it:
- Requires: Door handles with sensors, antenna modules, wiring, coding
- Cost: €300-800 depending on model and DIY vs shop
- Coding: Must be enabled in FEM/BDC via ISTA or E-Sys
