BMW coolant loss with no visible leak — where to check and how to diagnose

One of the most frustrating BMW problems: coolant level keeps dropping but no visible leak. Here are the hidden causes. HIDDEN LEAK LOCATIONS: 1. Expansion tank hairline crack — leaks only under pressure, evaporates quickly. Fix: 30-50 EUR 2. Water pump weep hole — drip evaporates on hot engine. Fix: 200-350 EUR 3. Heater core — coolant leaks into cabin, sweet smell, foggy windshield. Fix: 500-1000 EUR 4. Head gasket (internal) — coolant enters combustion chamber, white exhaust smoke. Fix: 1500-3000 EUR 5. Turbo coolant lines — hidden behind engine. Fix: 50-100 EUR 6. Oil cooler internal leak — milky oil cap residue. Fix: 200-400 EUR DIAGNOSTIC STEPS: pressure test system at 2 bar, check oil for contamination, check exhaust for white smoke, inspect from underneath, check passenger footwell, use UV dye for micro-leaks.

The expansion tank is the number one cause. I replace 3-4 per week at my shop. The plastic becomes brittle after 5-6 years and develops cracks that only leak under pressure. A pressure tester (30-50 EUR) is the definitive diagnostic tool — pressurize to 2 bar with engine cold and inspect every component. BMW coolant leaves a distinctive blue-green residue when dry — if you see it anywhere, that is your leak. Use UV dye and a UV flashlight for micro-leaks.

Had mystery coolant loss on my F30 328i N20. Spent weeks looking for external leaks — nothing. Turned out to be an internal head gasket leak. Coolant was entering cylinder 4 and burning off as white vapor. The combustion gas test confirmed it — test fluid turned from blue to yellow. The N20 has a known head gasket weakness on 2012-2014 models. Cost me 2200 EUR at an independent shop (BMW quoted 4500 EUR). If you have an N20 with disappearing coolant and no external leak, do the combustion gas test first — 30 EUR kit that saves weeks of troubleshooting.
