BMW Engine Swap Guide — What Fits Where and Is It Worth It?
BMW Engine Swaps — What Fits Where
Engine swaps are a time-honored BMW tradition. The modular engine design and shared platforms make many swaps surprisingly straightforward.
Popular Swaps
M54 into E30
The classic swap. The M54 3.0L drops into the E30 engine bay with adapter mounts and a wiring harness conversion.
- Why: Reliable power, smooth delivery, huge upgrade over the original M20
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Cost: €2,000-5,000
- Result: A lightweight E30 with 231 hp — pure driving joy
S54 into E30
The ultimate E30 swap. S54 from an E46 M3 into the lightweight E30 chassis.
- Why: 343 hp in a 1,100 kg car. Insane power-to-weight.
- Difficulty: Hard
- Cost: €5,000-10,000
- Result: A track weapon
N54 into E30/E36
Turbo power in a lightweight chassis.
- Why: 300+ hp stock, 500+ hp with bolt-ons
- Difficulty: Hard (wiring, cooling, turbo plumbing)
- Cost: €5,000-10,000
- Result: A sleeper that embarrasses supercars
S62 V8 into E36/E46
The E39 M5's 4.9L V8 in a smaller chassis.
- Why: 400 hp, V8 sound, rear-wheel drive
- Difficulty: Very hard (subframe mods, custom driveshaft, wiring)
- Cost: €8,000-15,000
- Result: A terrifying, wonderful machine
LS Swap (Chevy V8)
Controversial but effective. An LS V8 in a BMW chassis.
- Why: Cheap power, massive aftermarket, reliable
- Difficulty: Hard (custom mounts, wiring, cooling)
- Cost: €5,000-12,000
- Result: 400-600+ hp, sounds amazing, purists will hate you
What Makes BMW Swaps Easier
- Longitudinal engine layout — most BMWs have the engine running front-to-back, making swaps between BMW engines relatively straightforward
- Shared bell housing patterns — many BMW engines share transmission bolt patterns
- Strong aftermarket — swap kits, adapter plates, and wiring harnesses are available
- Community knowledge — decades of documented swaps on forums
What Makes Them Hard
- Wiring — modern BMW engines have complex DME systems. You need the engine harness, DME, and often the CAS module.
- Cooling — turbo swaps need upgraded cooling
- Exhaust — custom exhaust fabrication is usually required
- Registration — engine swaps may require re-registration or engineering certification depending on your country
Is It Worth It?
For a project car / track car: Absolutely. Engine swaps are one of the most rewarding automotive projects.
For a daily driver: Usually not. The cost, time, and potential issues make it impractical for most people. Buy the car with the engine you want.
For resale value: Swaps generally decrease resale value unless the swap is extremely well-executed and documented. Exception: S54 into E30 — these are highly desirable.
