Exhaust System Sections
Headers / Exhaust Manifold
- Connects engine to turbo (turbo cars) or to the rest of the exhaust
- Aftermarket headers available for NA engines (E46 M3, etc.)
Downpipe
- Turbo outlet to mid-pipe
- Biggest restriction point on turbo cars
- Upgrade provides most power gain
Mid-Pipe / Resonator Section
- Connects downpipe to rear section
- Contains resonator(s) for sound tuning
- Resonator delete = louder, more aggressive
Cat-Back
- Everything from the catalytic converter back
- Includes mid-pipe, resonator, muffler, tips
- Most popular exhaust upgrade
Axle-Back
- Rear muffler section only
- Easiest install, least power gain
- Primarily for sound improvement

Valve Exhaust Systems
Many modern BMWs (M cars, M Performance) have factory exhaust valves that open/close to change the sound character. Aftermarket systems can include valves too:
- Valves closed: Quiet, neighbor-friendly
- Valves open: Full volume, aggressive
- Controlled via: OEM button, aftermarket controller, or app
