Updated guide for getting the latest navigation maps on your BMW. ## Which system do you have? First, identify your iDrive version: - **CIC** (2008-2012): Round controller, split screen - **NBT** (2012-2016): Touchpad on controller - **NBT Evo / ID5/ID6** (2016-2019): Touchscreen + controller - **MGU / ID7** (2019-2022): Large touchscreen, new UI - **ID8** (2022+): Curved display, latest generation ## Update process for CIC/NBT/NBT Evo 1. Get the correct map files for your region (Europe, North America, etc.) 2. Get an FSC activation code for your VIN 3. Format a USB drive as FAT32 (for CIC) or ExFAT (for NBT/Evo) 4. Copy the map files to the USB root directory 5. Insert USB into the car 6. Go to iDrive > Navigation > Update 7. Enter the FSC code when prompted 8. Wait for installation (can take 30-60 minutes) ## Update process for MGU/ID7/ID8 Newer cars can update over-the-air (OTA) if you have an active Connected Drive subscription. Otherwise: 1. Download maps from BMW Connected Drive portal or third-party 2. Copy to USB drive 3. Install through iDrive settings ## Tips - Keep the engine running during the update (or use a battery charger) - Don't remove the USB until the update is complete - If the update fails, try reformatting the USB and starting over - Map updates typically release twice per year (spring and fall) The latest 2025/2026 maps include updated roads, POIs, and speed camera databases for all European countries.

Just updated my F10 NBT to the latest 2025 maps. The process was smooth - took about 45 minutes. The new maps have much better coverage of recently built roads in my area. One tip: if you get an "FSC code invalid" error, make sure you're using the code for the correct map region. Europe West and Europe East are separate activations.

For CIC users - make sure your USB is formatted as FAT32, not ExFAT. CIC doesn't support ExFAT and will just show "no update available". Also the USB needs to be 32GB or smaller for FAT32. If you have a larger USB drive, you can use a tool like Rufus to force FAT32 format on drives larger than 32GB.

Is it worth updating maps if you mostly use Google Maps on your phone via CarPlay? I have an F30 with NBT Evo and CarPlay works great. The built-in nav seems redundant. The only advantage I can think of is the HUD integration - the built-in nav shows turn-by-turn on the heads-up display which CarPlay doesn't do.
