BMW Neue Klasse — What We Know About BMW's Electric Future
BMW Neue Klasse — The Electric Future
BMW's Neue Klasse (New Class) platform represents the biggest transformation in BMW's history since the original Neue Klasse sedans of the 1960s.
What Is Neue Klasse?
Neue Klasse is BMW's next-generation vehicle platform, designed from the ground up for electric powertrains. It will underpin most new BMWs starting from 2025.
Key Features
New Electric Architecture
- Gen6 electric motors — more efficient, more powerful, no rare earth magnets
- Gen6 battery cells — cylindrical cells (like Tesla), 20% more energy density
- 800V architecture — faster charging, more efficient power delivery
- 30% more range than current BMW EVs
- 30% faster charging — 10-80% in under 30 minutes
Design Language
- Cleaner, simpler exterior design
- Smaller kidney grille (yes, BMW heard the complaints)
- Flush door handles
- Panoramic glass roof
- Minimalist interior with BMW Panoramic Vision (head-up display across the entire windshield width)
Technology
- BMW Panoramic Vision — full-width head-up display projected on the windshield
- Central display — large, minimalist touchscreen
- No instrument cluster — information projected on the windshield instead
- Level 3 autonomous driving capability
- Over-the-air updates for all systems
First Models
BMW iX3 (Neue Klasse, ~2025-2026)
- First Neue Klasse production car
- Electric SUV, replacing the current iX3
- Expected range: 600+ km
BMW i3 Sedan (Neue Klasse, ~2026)
- Electric 3 Series equivalent
- The most important Neue Klasse model
- Will define BMW's electric future
What About Combustion Engines?
BMW has confirmed that combustion engines will continue alongside Neue Klasse EVs. The B58 and B48 will remain in production. BMW's strategy is to offer both electric and combustion options — letting the market decide.
What It Means for Enthusiasts
The Neue Klasse represents both a threat and an opportunity:
- Threat: The driving experience may change fundamentally with electric power
- Opportunity: Electric motors deliver instant torque, and BMW's chassis engineering should translate well to EVs
- The M division is developing electric M cars — the first electric M car is expected around 2027
Whether you love it or fear it, the Neue Klasse is coming. And if BMW's track record is any indication, they'll find a way to make it feel like a BMW.
