The Beginning: E53 X5 (1999)
BMW's first SUV was controversial — purists said BMW shouldn't make an SUV. BMW called it a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV) to differentiate it. It was based on the E39 5 Series platform and proved the skeptics wrong.
