Overview

The S65 is a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that powered the E90/E92/E93 M3 from 2007-2013. It's the only V8 ever fitted to an M3, and it revs to an incredible 8,400 rpm.

Specifications:

  • Displacement: 3,999 cc
  • Bore x Stroke: 92.0 mm × 75.2 mm
  • Compression: 12.0:1
  • Power: 414 hp @ 8,300 rpm
  • Torque: 400 Nm @ 3,900 rpm
  • Redline: 8,400 rpm
  • Individual throttle bodies (8 of them)
  • Double-VANOS

Engineering Highlights

  • Flat-plane-like character — 90° V8 with 360° firing order
  • Individual throttle bodies — one per cylinder, F1-inspired
  • Extremely oversquare — 92mm bore vs 75.2mm stroke, built to rev
  • Dry sump lubrication (E92 M3 GTS variant)
  • Derived from the S85 V10 in the E60 M5

The Rod Bearing Issue

The S65's most critical known problem. The factory rod bearings can fail prematurely, potentially destroying the engine.

Why it happens:

  • Tight oil clearances from factory
  • High-RPM operation increases bearing loads
  • Oil quality and temperature management are critical

Prevention:

  • Rod bearing replacement every 60,000-80,000 km
  • Use Clevite or ACL race bearings
  • Cost: €1,000-2,000 for preventive replacement
  • Use 10W-60 oil as specified by BMW
  • Install an oil temperature gauge
  • Avoid sustained high-RPM driving with cold oil

Symptoms of bearing wear:

  • Faint knocking at idle (especially when warm)
  • Metal particles in oil (send oil for analysis)
  • Increased oil consumption

Other Issues

Throttle Actuator Failure

  • The electronic throttle actuators can fail
  • Symptoms: Limp mode, reduced power, throttle fault codes
  • Fix: Replace actuator(s), ~€300-600 each

VANOS Bolts

  • VANOS hub bolts can back out
  • BMW issued a recall/service action
  • Fix: Replace with updated bolts and Loctite

The Sound

The S65 is widely regarded as one of the best-sounding engines BMW has ever made. The combination of individual throttle bodies, high-revving V8, and flat-plane-like firing order produces an intoxicating wail that peaks at 8,000+ rpm.

There will never be another V8 M3. The S65 is a once-in-a-lifetime engine.
