BMW VANOS — How Variable Valve Timing Works

What Is VANOS?

VANOS (VAriable NOckenwellen Steuerung — Variable Camshaft Control) is BMW's variable valve timing system. It adjusts the timing of the intake and/or exhaust camshafts to optimize power, torque, fuel economy, and emissions across the RPM range.

VANOS Generations

Single VANOS (1992-2000)

  • Adjusts: Intake camshaft only
  • Used on: M50TU, S50
  • Range: ~12° of adjustment
  • Mechanism: Helical gear driven by oil pressure

Double VANOS (1998-present)

  • Adjusts: Both intake AND exhaust camshafts
  • Used on: M52TU, M54, N52, N54, N55, B48, B58, all modern BMW engines
  • Range: ~40-60° intake, ~30-40° exhaust
  • Mechanism: Solenoid-controlled oil flow to vane-type actuators

How It Works

  1. DME determines optimal cam timing based on RPM, load, temperature
  2. Solenoid valves direct oil pressure to the VANOS actuator
  3. Actuator rotates the camshaft relative to the timing chain sprocket
  4. Camshaft position sensor confirms the actual position
  5. Closed-loop control — DME continuously adjusts

Benefits at Different RPM

RPM Range Intake Timing Exhaust Timing Benefit
Idle Retarded Advanced Smooth idle, low emissions
Low RPM Advanced Retarded Maximum torque
Mid RPM Moderate Moderate Best efficiency
High RPM Retarded Advanced Maximum power

Common VANOS Problems

1. VANOS Seal Failure (M52TU, M54, S54)

  • Rubber seals harden with age
  • Symptoms: Loss of low-end torque, rough idle, poor fuel economy
  • Fix: VANOS seal kit (~€50-100)

2. VANOS Solenoid Failure

  • Solenoid valves clog or fail electrically
  • Symptoms: VANOS fault codes, rough idle, reduced power
  • Fix: Replace solenoids (~€50-100 each)

3. VANOS Rattle

  • Worn VANOS actuator internals cause rattling on cold start
  • Common on: S54, S85, N54
  • Fix: VANOS rebuild or replacement

4. VANOS Hub Bolt Failure (S85 V10)

  • VANOS hub bolts can back out
  • Potentially catastrophic — can destroy the engine
  • BMW issued a recall
  • Fix: Updated bolts with Loctite

Maintenance

  • Use quality oil (VANOS depends on clean oil pressure)
  • Short oil change intervals
  • Replace VANOS solenoids every 100,000-150,000 km
  • Listen for cold-start rattle — early warning of VANOS wear
