How to Change Your BMW Oil at Home — Step by Step for Any Model
How to Change Your BMW Oil at Home
An oil change is the single most important maintenance item on your BMW. Here's how to do it yourself and save €100-200 every time.
What You Need
Parts
- Engine oil (see our oil guide for your specific engine)
- Oil filter (Mann HU816x for most inline-6, HU6004z for 4-cylinder)
- Drain plug washer (aluminum crush washer)
Tools
- 17mm socket or wrench (drain plug)
- Oil filter cap wrench (76mm 14-flute for most models)
- Jack and jack stands (or ramps)
- Drain pan (at least 8 liters)
- Funnel
- Paper towels / rags
The Procedure
1. Warm Up the Engine
Drive for 5-10 minutes. Warm oil flows better and carries more contaminants out.
2. Lift the Car
Jack up the front and place on jack stands. Or drive onto ramps. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
3. Remove the Drain Plug
- Place drain pan under the oil pan
- Remove the 17mm drain plug
- Let oil drain for 10-15 minutes
- Replace the crush washer on the drain plug
- Reinstall drain plug — torque to 25 Nm (don't overtighten!)
4. Replace the Oil Filter
- Locate the oil filter housing (top of engine on most BMWs)
- Remove the filter cap with the 76mm wrench
- Pull out the old filter element
- Replace the O-ring on the cap (included with new filter)
- Insert new filter element
- Reinstall cap — torque to 25 Nm
5. Fill with New Oil
- Remove the oil fill cap (top of valve cover)
- Pour in the correct amount (check your engine — typically 5.0-6.5L)
- Start with 0.5L less than spec, then check the level
- Start the engine, let it run for 30 seconds
- Turn off, wait 2 minutes, check dipstick or electronic level
- Top up to the correct level
6. Reset the Service Indicator
- Use BimmerCode, Carly, or the instrument cluster reset procedure
- Don't skip this — the CBS system needs to know the oil is fresh
Common Mistakes
- Overtightening the drain plug — strips the oil pan threads (aluminum pan!)
- Forgetting the crush washer — causes a slow leak
- Overfilling — excess oil foams and can damage seals. Check the level!
- Wrong oil — always use BMW LL-01 or LL-04 approved oil
- Not resetting the service indicator — CBS will keep nagging you
Time and Cost
- Time: 30-45 minutes
- Parts cost: €40-70 (oil + filter + washer)
- Dealer cost for same service: €150-300
- Savings: €100-230 every oil change
Do this 2-3 times per year and you'll save €300-700 annually. Plus you'll know it was done right.
