My BMW Pulls to One Side — Alignment, Tires, or Something Worse?
My BMW Pulls to One Side
Your BMW drifts left or right without steering input. Here's how to diagnose it without wasting money.
Check These First (Free)
1. Tire Pressure
Uneven tire pressure is the #1 cause of pulling. A tire with 2 PSI less than the other side will cause a noticeable pull.
- Fix: Check and equalize all four tires to the spec on the door jamb sticker
- Time: 5 minutes at any gas station
2. Road Crown
Most roads are slightly crowned (higher in the center for drainage). This causes a slight pull to the right. If the pull is mild and only on certain roads, this may be normal.
3. Recent Tire Rotation or Replacement
If the pull started after tire work, a tire may have been mounted incorrectly or the balance is off.
Likely Causes
4. Alignment
The most common real cause. Wheels that aren't pointing straight cause pulling.
- Symptoms: Pulls consistently to one side, steering wheel off-center
- Fix: 4-wheel alignment — €60-120
- When: After any suspension work, hitting a big pothole, or every 20,000 km
5. Uneven Tire Wear
If one tire is more worn than the other (same axle), it has a different rolling diameter, causing a pull.
- Fix: Replace tires in pairs (both fronts or both rears)
6. Brake Caliper Sticking
A caliper that doesn't fully release drags on one side.
- Symptoms: Pull gets worse when braking, wheel is hot after driving, burning smell
- Fix: Clean and lubricate caliper slide pins, or replace caliper
Less Common Causes
7. Control Arm Bushing Wear
Worn bushings allow the wheel to shift, changing alignment dynamically.
- Symptoms: Pull that changes with bumps, clunking noises
- Fix: Replace control arms
8. Strut/Spring Issue
A broken spring or leaking strut can cause the car to sit lower on one side.
- Symptoms: Visible height difference, pull to the lower side
- Fix: Replace strut/spring
9. Steering Rack Issue
Internal leak or wear in the steering rack.
- Symptoms: Pull that changes, steering feels different left vs right
- Fix: Steering rack replacement — expensive (€800-2,000)
The Diagnostic Order
- Check tire pressures (free, 5 minutes)
- Inspect tires for uneven wear (free, 5 minutes)
- Get an alignment (€60-120)
- If pull persists after alignment, inspect suspension components
- Check brakes (caliper sticking)
- If all else fails, steering rack inspection
