Coilovers vs Springs vs Stock — BMW Suspension Upgrade Guide
Stock Suspension
BMW offers several suspension tiers from factory:
Standard Suspension
- Comfort-oriented
- Softer springs and dampers
- Higher ride height
M Sport Suspension
- 10-15mm lower than standard
- Firmer springs and dampers
- Better body control
- Still comfortable for daily driving
Adaptive M Suspension (EDC)
- Electronically adjustable dampers
- Comfort to Sport+ range
- Best of both worlds
Lowering Springs
Replace stock springs with shorter, stiffer springs while keeping stock dampers.
Drop: Typically 20-40mm
Pros:
- Affordable (~€200-400 for a set)
- Lower center of gravity
- Better appearance
- Improved body control
Cons:
- Stock dampers aren't valved for shorter springs → reduced damper life
- Can be too stiff for daily driving
- Limited adjustability
- May need alignment after installation
Popular brands: Eibach Pro-Kit, H&R Sport, Bilstein B12 (springs + dampers)
Coilovers
Complete replacement of springs AND dampers with adjustable units.
Pros:
- Adjustable ride height
- Adjustable damping (most kits)
- Matched spring rates and damping
- Best handling potential
- Can be set up for street or track
Cons:
- Expensive (~€800-3,000+)
- Can be harsh if set up incorrectly
- Require alignment after installation
- Cheap coilovers can be worse than stock

The Golden Rule
Don't cheap out on suspension. Bad coilovers are worse than stock. If your budget is limited, a good set of springs with matched dampers (like Bilstein B12) will outperform cheap coilovers every time.
