BMW Wheel Bearings — Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Replacement
BMW Wheel Bearings — Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Replacement
What Do Wheel Bearings Do?
Wheel bearings allow the wheel hub to rotate freely on the spindle/knuckle with minimal friction. Modern BMWs use sealed, pre-greased hub-type bearings that are maintenance-free until they fail.
Types of Wheel Bearings in BMW
Press-In Bearings (Older Models)
- E36, E46, E39: Bearings are pressed into the hub or knuckle
- Require a press for removal and installation
- Can replace bearing only (cheaper)
Hub Assembly (Modern Models)
- E90+, F30+: Bearing is integrated into the hub assembly
- Replace the entire hub unit
- Easier installation but more expensive parts
Symptoms of Failing Wheel Bearings
- Humming/droning noise that increases with speed
- Noise changes with steering — louder when turning one direction, quieter the other
- Vibration through steering wheel or floor
- ABS/DSC warning light — wheel speed sensor is integrated into the hub
- Play in the wheel — grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it
Diagnosis
The Steering Test
- Drive at 60-80 km/h on a quiet road
- Gently swerve left and right
- Noise gets louder turning LEFT → RIGHT bearing is bad (more load on right)
- Noise gets louder turning RIGHT → LEFT bearing is bad
Jack Test
- Jack up the suspected corner
- Spin the wheel by hand — listen for grinding or roughness
- Grab the wheel at 12/6 and 3/9 — check for play
- Any play = bearing needs replacement
Replacement
Cost
| Model | Part Cost | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| E46 (press-in) | €40-80 | €150-300 |
| E90 (hub assembly) | €100-200 | €100-200 |
| F30 (hub assembly) | €120-250 | €100-200 |
Tips
- Always replace the hub bolt(s) — they're torque-to-yield
- Torque the axle nut to spec (varies by model, typically 290-310 Nm)
- Check ABS sensor ring for damage during replacement
- Road test and verify ABS function after replacement
