Remote ECU tuning - how does it actually work?

Ive seen a few companies offering remote ECU tuning where you dont need to visit a workshop. How does this work exactly? Do they send you a tool to read the ECU? Is it safe? Seems too good to be true honestly. Anyone here done remote tuning? What was your expirience?

Remote tuning is legit. I did it on my F30. They send you a tool (usually CMD Flash slave), you read the ECU, send the file, they modify it and send it back. Then you flash it. Simple process.

I was skeptical too but tried it and it worked perfectly. The convenience of not having to drive to a workshop is great. Especially if the nearest good tuner is far away.

its safe as long as you use a reputable tuner. the tool reads and writes the ECU just like a workshop would. ive done it 3 times on different cars with no issues
