B47 vs N47 diesel - which is better?

The B47 replaced the N47 in 2014. Key differences: N47: - Timing chain at the BACK (terrible design) - Chain failure is common and expensive - Good power and torque - Cheap to buy now B47: - Timing chain at the FRONT (proper design) - Much more reliable - Better fuel economy - Slightly more power - More expensive If youre buying a 4-cylinder diesel BMW, spend the extra money and get the B47. The N47 timing chain issue is a ticking time bomb.

M54 is more reliable but the N52 is the better engine. The Valvetronic system on N52 gives better fuel economy and smoother power delivery.

B47 is better in every way. The N47 has the infamous timing chain issue (chain is at the back of the engine, replacement requires engine removal, costs 3000+ EUR). The B47 moved the timing chain to the front, making it accessible and much cheaper to service. The B47 is also quieter, more refined, and makes more power. If youre buying a diesel BMW, always go B47 (2014+) over N47.
