The N47 timing chain issue is well documented but heres a prevention guide: 1. Listen for chain rattle on cold start (early warning sign) 2. Change oil every 10k km max (not BMWs 30k recommendation) 3. Use quality oil (Castrol Edge or Liqui Moly) 4. Dont ignore any unusual engine noises 5. If you hear rattle, get it fixed IMMEDIATELY Replacement cost: 1500-2500 EUR depending on damage If the chain snaps: engine replacement (5000+ EUR) The chain runs at the back of the engine (bad design by BMW) which makes it expensive to replace. But its cheaper than a new engine.

Great prevention guide. I would add: avoid short trips. The N47 timing chain wears faster when the engine doesnt reach full operating temperature regularly.
