BMW 3 Series Evolution — Every Generation from E21 to G20
Overview
The BMW 3 Series is the backbone of BMW's lineup and one of the most successful car nameplates in history. Since 1975, seven generations have defined the sports sedan segment.
E21 — First Generation (1975-1983)
The original 3 Series replaced the BMW 02 Series. It established the formula: compact rear-wheel-drive sedan with a focus on driving dynamics.
- Engines: 1.6L-2.3L inline-four and inline-six
- Key model: 323i — the first sporty 3 Series
- Production: ~1.36 million units
- Legacy: Established the 3 Series nameplate and RWD sports sedan concept
E30 — Second Generation (1982-1994)
The E30 refined the formula and introduced the M3. It's now a highly collectible classic.
- Body styles: Sedan, touring (wagon), coupe, convertible
- Engines: 1.6L-2.5L four and six-cylinder, plus 2.3L S14 (M3)
- Key model: E30 M3 — homologation special with the S14 4-cylinder, dominated touring car racing
- Production: ~2.34 million units
- Legacy: The M3 was born. The E30 touring introduced the wagon body style.
E36 — Third Generation (1990-2000)
The E36 modernized the 3 Series with a more refined chassis, better safety, and the first inline-six M3.
- Body styles: Sedan, touring, coupe, convertible, compact (hatchback), Z3 (shared platform)
- Engines: 1.6L-2.8L four and six-cylinder, 3.0L/3.2L S50/S52 (M3)
- Key model: E36 M3 — first six-cylinder M3, 286-321 hp depending on market
- Production: ~2.74 million units
- Legacy: Brought the 3 Series into the modern era. The compact (ti) was a unique hatchback variant.
E46 — Fourth Generation (1997-2006)
Many consider the E46 the best 3 Series ever made. Perfect balance of analog driving feel and modern refinement.
- Body styles: Sedan, touring, coupe, convertible, compact
- Engines: 1.8L-3.0L four and six-cylinder, 3.2L S54 (M3)
- Key model: E46 M3 — the S54 inline-six is one of BMW's greatest engines (343 hp, 8,000 rpm redline)
- Production: ~3.25 million units
- Known issues: Rear subframe cracking, cooling system, VANOS
- Legacy: The gold standard for driver engagement. The CSL variant is a legend.
E90/E91/E92/E93 — Fifth Generation (2004-2013)
The E90 generation introduced turbocharging to the 3 Series and was the last to offer a naturally aspirated inline-six.
- Body styles: Sedan (E90), touring (E91), coupe (E92), convertible (E93)
- Engines: N46, N52, N54, N55, N20, plus S65 V8 (M3)
- Key model: E92 M3 — the only V8 M3 ever made (S65, 414 hp, 8,400 rpm)
- Production: ~3.26 million units
- Legacy: The N54 started the turbo era. The S65 V8 M3 is the last naturally aspirated M3.
F30/F31/F34 — Sixth Generation (2011-2019)
The F30 brought electric power steering, turbo-only engines, and a more comfort-oriented character.
- Body styles: Sedan (F30), touring (F31), Gran Turismo (F34)
- Engines: N20, N55, B48, B58, plus S55 (M3 F80)
- Key model: F80 M3 — twin-turbo S55, 431-450 hp, returned to inline-six
- Production: ~4.5 million units
- Legacy: Controversial for losing hydraulic steering feel, but the F80 M3 is a performance monster.
G20/G21 — Seventh Generation (2018-present)
The current 3 Series continues the evolution with the latest technology, CLAR platform, and mild hybrid options.
- Body styles: Sedan (G20), touring (G21)
- Engines: B48, B58, plus S58 (M3 G80)
- Key model: G80 M3 — twin-turbo S58, 473-510 hp, available with AWD and manual
- Legacy: The G80 M3 is the most powerful and capable M3 ever, despite the controversial kidney grille design.
