Apple CarPlay is the most requested retrofit for older BMWs. Here are all the options available in 2026. OPTION 1: OEM NBT EVO Retrofit (Best Quality) - Requires NBT EVO headunit with CarPlay FSC code - Wireless CarPlay (connects via WiFi, no cable needed) - Full integration with iDrive controller and steering wheel buttons - Cost: 400-1000 EUR depending on current headunit - Pros: factory quality, wireless, perfect integration - Cons: expensive, requires coding knowledge OPTION 2: Aftermarket CarPlay Module (MMI Box) - Plugs into existing headunit via LVDS/HDMI - Works with CCC, CIC, and NBT headunits - Both wired and wireless options available - Cost: 150-300 EUR - Pros: no headunit replacement needed, easy install - Cons: overlay on existing screen (not native), occasional lag OPTION 3: Android Screen Replacement - Replaces entire screen with Android-based touchscreen - Built-in wireless CarPlay and Android Auto - Available in 8.8, 10.25, and 12.3 inch sizes - Cost: 300-600 EUR - Pros: large screen, modern interface, many features - Cons: not OEM look, variable quality, may lose some BMW functions OPTION 4: CarLinkit Adapter (for cars with wired CarPlay) - Converts existing wired CarPlay to wireless - Simple plug-and-play USB adapter - Cost: 60-100 EUR - Pros: cheapest option, no installation needed - Cons: only works if car already has wired CarPlay MY RECOMMENDATION: If your car has NBT or newer: Option 4 (CarLinkit) for wireless upgrade If your car has CIC: Option 1 (NBT EVO retrofit) for best experience If your car has CCC: Option 2 (MMI box) or Option 3 (Android screen)

I have tested all four options on different BMWs and the OEM NBT EVO retrofit is by far the best experience. The wireless CarPlay connection is stable, the interface is smooth, and it integrates perfectly with the iDrive controller. The aftermarket MMI boxes work but they feel like an overlay — there is noticeable input lag and the resolution does not always match the screen. For the Android screen replacements, quality varies enormously. The cheap ones from AliExpress (under 200 EUR) have terrible touch response and overheat in summer. The premium ones from Eonon or Andream (400-600 EUR) are much better but still not OEM quality. If you go this route, make sure it runs Android 12 or newer and has at least 4GB RAM. One thing people forget: wireless CarPlay drains your phone battery faster than wired. If you are doing long drives, keep a charging cable handy. The OEM wireless CarPlay in the NBT EVO does support simultaneous wireless charging if your car has the Qi charging pad.

Just installed the CarLinkit adapter on my F30 with factory wired CarPlay and it works perfectly. Took 2 minutes — plug it into the USB port in the center console and pair your phone via Bluetooth. The wireless connection is stable and connects automatically when I get in the car. The only downside is a 5-10 second delay on initial connection compared to plugging in a cable. But once connected, there is no difference in performance. For 80 EUR it is the best upgrade I have done on the car. No coding, no wiring, no headunit changes needed. For anyone with an F30 LCI (2015+) with the Professional navigation option — your car already has wired CarPlay capability. You just need the CarPlay FSC code activated (free from BMW for most 2016+ models) and then the CarLinkit adapter for wireless.
