Overview

The F25 X3 (2010-2017) was a significant improvement over the E83, sharing the F30 platform.

Engine

N20 (xDrive20i, xDrive28i)

• Timing chain — the big concern, especially 2012-2014
• Oil filter housing gasket
• Valve cover gasket

N55 (xDrive35i)

• Valve cover / PCV system
• Electric water pump
• Oil filter housing gasket
• Best petrol choice for reliability (after chain concerns of N20)

N57 Diesel (xDrive20d, xDrive30d, xDrive35d)

• Swirl flaps
• DPF clogging
• EGR valve
• Turbo actuator (VGT)

Chassis

• Front thrust arm bushings
• Rear shock mounts — can creak
• xDrive transfer case maintenance

Electronics

• Tailgate actuator failure
• iDrive screen delamination
• Parking brake actuator

X3 vs X1

The F25 X3 is more spacious and refined than the E84 X1. The N55 xDrive35i is the sweet spot — powerful, reliable, and capable.
