Engine Issues
N20 (xDrive20i, xDrive28i)
- Timing chain stretch — same critical issue as F30 328i
- Oil filter housing gasket leak
- Valve cover gasket leak
- Budget for chain replacement on 2012-2014 models
N47 Diesel (xDrive18d, xDrive20d)
- Rear-mounted timing chain — expensive to access
- Swirl flap failure
- EGR clogging
- DPF issues with city driving
N52 (xDrive25i — early models)
- Water pump failure
- VANOS solenoids
- Most reliable E84 engine choice
Chassis
- Front control arm bushings — standard BMW wear
- Rear trailing arm bushings
- xDrive transfer case — fluid changes every 60k km
Electronics
- iDrive CIC screen failures
- Parking sensor malfunctions
- Comfort access door handle issues
Buying Advice
Best choice: N52 if available, or late N20 (2015). Avoid early N20 and N47 unless timing chain has been done.
