Overview
The G30 5 Series (2016-2023) is one of BMW's most refined sedans. Generally reliable, with fewer issues than the F10.
Engine
B48 (520i, 530i)
- Coolant loss — thermostat housing
- Otherwise very reliable
- No timing chain concerns
B58 (540i, M540i)
- Coolant loss — same thermostat issue
- Charge pipe on tuned cars
- Excellent reliability overall
N63TU2/TU3 V8 (550i, M550i)
- Much improved over earlier N63
- Minor oil consumption on some units
- Coolant system more robust
- Still the most expensive to maintain
B57 Diesel (520d, 530d, 540d)
- DPF with city driving
- AdBlue system faults
- EGR valve clogging
- Generally reliable for a diesel
Chassis
- Air suspension (if equipped) — still a wear item but improved
- Rear shock mounts — occasional creaking
- Run-flat tires — harsh ride, many owners switch to conventional
Electronics
- iDrive software bugs — early software had glitches, resolved via updates
- Wireless CarPlay — occasional disconnects
- Gesture control — can be triggered accidentally
- Display key — battery drains quickly
- Parking assistant — false warnings
48V Mild Hybrid (2020+)
- Starter-generator can have issues
- 48V battery located in trunk
- Generally reliable but adds complexity
Best Buy
The B58 540i/M540i is the sweet spot — powerful, refined, reliable, and very tunable. The B48 530i is the sensible choice for lower running costs.
