BMW N52 Engine — The Last Naturally Aspirated Inline-Six
Overview
The N52 is BMW's naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six, produced from 2004 to 2015. It was the first BMW engine to use a magnesium/aluminum composite block and represents the pinnacle of BMW's NA straight-six engineering before the turbo era.
Key Specifications (N52B30):
- Displacement: 2,996 cc
- Bore x Stroke: 85.0 mm × 88.0 mm
- Compression Ratio: 10.7:1
- Max Power: 258 hp (190 kW) @ 6,600 rpm
- Max Torque: 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) @ 2,500-4,000 rpm
- Fuel System: Port injection
- Features: Valvetronic II, Double-VANOS, magnesium block
The Magnesium Block
The N52 was revolutionary — its block uses a magnesium outer shell with an aluminum inner liner. This saved approximately 10 kg compared to a full aluminum block. The composite construction was expensive to produce and was not carried forward to the B58.
Valvetronic II
The N52 features BMW's second-generation Valvetronic system, which provides continuously variable valve lift from 0.18mm to 9.85mm. This eliminates the need for a traditional throttle body at part load, reducing pumping losses and improving fuel efficiency by up to 10%.
Common Problems
1. Valve Cover Gasket & Eccentric Shaft Sensor
- Frequency: Very common above 80,000 km
- Symptoms: Oil leaks, rough idle, Valvetronic faults
- Solution: Replace valve cover gasket and eccentric shaft sensor together
2. VANOS Solenoid Failure
- Frequency: Common
- Symptoms: Rough idle, loss of power, rattling on cold start
- Solution: Replace VANOS solenoids (~€50-100 each)
3. Water Pump & Thermostat
- Frequency: Very common, 60,000-100,000 km
- Solution: Replace both together. Budget ~€400-600 for parts.
4. Oil Consumption
- Frequency: Some N52s consume oil, especially 2007-2009 models
- Cause: Piston ring design
- Solution: Monitor levels. Severe cases may need piston ring replacement.
Applications
- 2005-2011 BMW 325i/328i/330i (E90/E91/E92/E93)
- 2005-2010 BMW 525i/528i/530i (E60/E61)
- 2006-2010 BMW Z4 (E85/E86)
- 2006-2013 BMW X3 (E83/F25)
- 2006-2013 BMW X5 (E70)
The N52 is silky smooth, rev-happy, and sounds incredible at high RPM. It's the last of a dying breed — BMW's final naturally aspirated inline-six for the mass market.
