BMW N20 Engine — Technical Guide & Timing Chain Issue
Overview
The N20 is BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, produced 2011-2017. It replaced the naturally aspirated N52 in many models, offering similar power with better fuel economy.
Specifications (N20B20):
- Displacement: 1,997 cc
- Bore x Stroke: 84.0 mm × 90.1 mm
- Compression: 10.0:1
- Power: 245 hp @ 5,000 rpm (high-output)
- Torque: 350 Nm @ 1,250-4,800 rpm
- Turbo: Single twin-scroll
- Features: Valvetronic III, Double-VANOS, direct injection
The Timing Chain Problem
The N20's most critical issue. The simplex (single-row) timing chain stretches prematurely, and the plastic chain guide rails crack and break.
Why it happens:
- Single-row chain (vs duplex on older engines) — less robust
- Plastic chain guides become brittle with heat cycling
- Oil quality and change intervals directly affect chain life
Timeline of failure:
- 2011-2014 models: Highest risk, some fail as early as 30,000 km
- 2015+: Revised chain and guides, significantly more reliable
Symptoms:
- Rattling noise on cold start (chain slap)
- Check engine light with timing-related codes
- Rough running, loss of power
- In worst case: chain jumps teeth → valve-to-piston contact → engine destruction
Solution: Replace chain, both guide rails, tensioner, and both VANOS gears. Cost: €1,500-3,000 with labor.
Prevention:
- Oil changes every 8,000-10,000 km (ignore BMW's 24,000 km recommendation)
- Use BMW LL-01 approved oil, 0W-30 or 5W-30
- Listen for cold-start rattle — catch it early
Other Common Issues
Oil Filter Housing Gasket
- Leaks oil onto the serpentine belt
- Fix: Replace gasket, ~€150-300
Valve Cover Gasket
- Oil seepage from valve cover
- Fix: Replace gasket, ~€200-400
Turbo Wastegate Rattle
- Similar to N54, wastegate develops play
- Fix: Wastegate actuator replacement
Tuning
| Stage | Power | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Stock | 245 hp | 350 Nm |
| Stage 1 | 290-310 hp | 420-450 Nm |
| Stage 2 | 330-350 hp | 480-520 Nm |
Applications
- 2012-2016 BMW 328i (F30/F31)
- 2012-2016 BMW 528i (F10/F11)
- 2012-2016 BMW X3 28i (F25)
- 2012-2016 BMW Z4 sDrive28i (E89)
The N20 is a capable engine when maintained properly — but the timing chain issue makes preventive maintenance absolutely critical.
