Overview

The M54 is BMW's naturally aspirated inline-six produced from 2000-2006. It's the successor to the legendary M52 and is known for exceptional smoothness and reliability.

Common Issues (Age-Related)

1. VANOS Seals

• Rubber seals harden with age
• Symptoms: Loss of low-end torque, rough idle
• Fix: VANOS rebuild kit (~€50-100)

2. CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) Valve

• The CCV system clogs or the diaphragm tears
• Symptoms: Oil leaks, rough idle, whistling noise
• Fix: Replace CCV valve (~€30-80)

3. Cooling System

• Same BMW plastic cooling components that age poorly
• Replace: Expansion tank, thermostat, water pump, hoses

4. Oil Separator / Valve Cover Gasket

5. DISA Valve Failure

• The DISA (Differentiated Intake System Actuator) flap can break
