- M54B25: 2.5L, 192 hp
- M54B30: 3.0L, 231 hp
Key Specs (M54B30):
- Displacement: 2,979 cc
- Bore x Stroke: 84.0 mm × 89.6 mm
- Compression: 10.2:1
- Power: 231 hp @ 5,900 rpm
- Torque: 300 Nm @ 3,500 rpm
- Features: Double-VANOS, aluminum block with Alusil liners
Why It's Considered Bulletproof
- Simple, proven design with no turbo complexity
- Robust bottom end — forged crank, strong rods
- No timing chain issues (duplex chain, lasts 300,000+ km)
- No direct injection carbon buildup
- Extremely smooth and refined
Common Issues (Age-Related)
1. VANOS Seals
- Rubber seals harden with age
- Symptoms: Loss of low-end torque, rough idle
- Fix: VANOS rebuild kit (~€50-100)
2. CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) Valve
- The CCV system clogs or the diaphragm tears
- Symptoms: Oil leaks, rough idle, whistling noise
- Fix: Replace CCV valve (~€30-80)
3. Cooling System
- Same BMW plastic cooling components that age poorly
- Replace: Expansion tank, thermostat, water pump, hoses
4. Oil Separator / Valve Cover Gasket
- Gasket hardens and leaks
- Fix: Replace gasket (~€50-100)
5. DISA Valve Failure
- The DISA (Differentiated Intake System Actuator) flap can break
- Symptoms: Rattling from intake, loss of mid-range torque
- Fix: Replace DISA valve or repair flap pin (~€100-200)
