BMW S58 Engine — The G80 M3/M4 Twin-Turbo Powerhouse
Overview
The S58 is BMW M's latest 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six, debuting in the X3M/X4M (2019) and then the G80 M3/G82 M4 (2021). It's based on the B58 architecture but extensively reworked by M division.
Specifications:
- Displacement: 2,993 cc
- Bore x Stroke: 84.0 mm × 90.0 mm
- Compression: 9.3:1
- Power: 473 hp (standard) / 510 hp (Competition)
- Torque: 550 Nm (standard) / 650 Nm (Competition)
- Turbochargers: Twin Mitsubishi TD04-22T
- Redline: 7,200 rpm
M Division Upgrades over B58
- Forged crankshaft with cross-drilled oil passages
- Forged connecting rods (lighter, stronger)
- 3D-printed cylinder head bracket (weight optimization)
- Twin turbochargers instead of single twin-scroll
- Closed-deck block with reinforced main bearing caps
- Oil-to-water charge air cooler
- Sodium-filled exhaust valves for better heat management
Key Improvements over S55
- No crank hub issue — the S58 uses a keyed crank hub from factory
- Stronger bottom end — closed-deck B58 base vs open-deck N55 base
- Better cooling — improved oil and coolant circuits
- More power headroom — responds extremely well to tuning
Known Issues (So Far)
The S58 is still relatively new, but early reports include:
1. Oil Consumption
- Some S58s consume 0.5-1L per 5,000 km
- BMW considers up to 1L/1,500 km "normal"
- Monitor oil level regularly
2. Charge Pipe
- Stock plastic charge pipe can crack under increased boost
- Fix: Aftermarket aluminum charge pipe for tuned cars
3. Coolant Hose Connections
- Some reports of coolant weeping from hose connections
- Fix: Re-clamp or replace affected hoses
Tuning Potential
| Stage | Power | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Stock Comp | 510 hp | 650 Nm |
| Stage 1 | 600-630 hp | 780-820 Nm |
| Stage 2 | 680-720 hp | 880-920 Nm |
| Stage 2+ E85 | 750-800 hp | 950+ Nm |
The S58 is an absolute monster — it's the most tunable M engine BMW has ever made, with the closed-deck block providing a rock-solid foundation.
