Been getting a lot of questions about exhaust upgrades so figured I'd write a comprehensive guide.

Types of exhaust upgrades

Downpipe (DP)
The downpipe connects directly to the turbo. Upgrading to a catless or high-flow catted downpipe is the single biggest exhaust mod for turbocharged BMWs. On N54/N55/B58 engines, a downpipe alone can add 20-40hp when paired with a tune.

Catback exhaust
Everything from the catalytic converter back. Mostly for sound - adds maybe 5-10hp on its own. Brands like Akrapovic, Remus, Eisenmann are popular.

Full turbo-back system
Downpipe + midpipe + catback. Maximum flow, maximum gains. Usually only worth it for stage 2+ builds.

What you need to know

  • A downpipe without a tune will throw CEL codes (P0420, P0430)
  • Catless downpipes are louder and make more power but are illegal for road use in most EU countries
  • 200-cell sport cats are a good compromise - nearly catless flow with emissions compliance
  • Valve-controlled exhausts (like stock M Performance) let you switch between quiet and loud

My recommendations by engine

  • N54: VRSF catless DP or Catted DP + any catback
  • N55: Same as N54, slightly less gains
  • B58: Downpipe is essential for stage 2. VRSF, Wagner, or Evolution Racewerks
  • N20: Limited options but catless DP + tune gives solid results
  • Diesel (N47/N57/B47/B57): Downpipe + DPF delete for max gains (off-road only)

Running VRSF catless downpipe on my F30 340i B58 with BM3 stage 2 tune. The difference is night and day. Spool is noticeably faster and the turbo sounds incredible. Gained about 35whp on the dyno compared to stock DP with stage 1.

Only downside is the smell at idle when cold. Goes away once warmed up.

For diesel guys - if you're doing a DPF delete, make sure your tuner removes the DPF regeneration cycle from the ECU map. Otherwise you'll get constant regen attempts that dump fuel into the exhaust. I learned this the hard way on my E60 530d.

Also worth noting that a straight pipe after DPF delete is LOUD on diesels. A resonator helps a lot.

Akrapovic Evolution on my G82 M4 Competition. Cost a fortune but the titanium construction saved 8kg over stock and the sound is absolutely perfect. Deep and aggressive under load, quiet at cruise.

For anyone considering it - the valve control integrates with the stock exhaust button so you keep OEM functionality.

Budget option that works great: eBay 200-cell sport cat downpipe + stock catback. On my N55 335i it cost about 150 EUR and with a MHD stage 2 tune I'm making 370hp. The stock catback flows well enough that you don't really need to upgrade it unless you want more sound.

The quality of cheap DPs has gotten much better in recent years. Just make sure to get stainless steel, not mild steel.
