BMW N54 stage 2 tuning guide - from stock to 400hp

The N54 twin-turbo engine is one of the best tuning platforms BMW ever made. Heres a complete guide to building a reliable 400hp N54. Stock power: 306hp / 400nm Required mods for stage 2 (400hp target): 1. Catless downpipes - removes the restrictive catalytic converters (VRSF or ARM are popular choices, 300-500 EUR) 2. Front mount intercooler (FMIC) - the stock top-mount intercooler heat soaks quickly (Wagner or VRSF, 400-800 EUR) 3. Stage 2 ECU tune - MHD or custom tune (200-500 EUR) 4. Index 12 fuel injectors - the older injectors cant keep up with the extra fuel demand (200-300 EUR for a set) 5. New spark plugs - NGK 97506 one step colder (50 EUR) Optional but recommended: - Upgraded charge pipe (stock plastic one cracks under boost) - Oil catch can (reduces carbon buildup on intake valves) - Upgraded HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) if going above 400hp Expected results: 380-420hp / 520-580nm on 98 octane fuel Total cost: approximately 1500-2500 EUR depending on parts chosen The N54 can handle this power level on stock internals with no issues. Many N54s are running 400hp+ for 100k+ km without problems. The key is a quality tune and regular maintenance. Ask me anything about N54 builds!

Running exactly this setup on my 335i. Can confirm 400hp is very achievable and reliable on the N54. One thing I would add - upgrade the oil cooler if you plan to do any spirited driving. The stock N54 oil cooler is undersized and oil temps can reach 130C+ on track, which degrades the oil quickly. A Mishimoto or CSF oil cooler keeps temps under 110C.

The N54 is legendary for a reason. Ive built several N54s to 500hp+ on stock internals. The weak point at that level is the wastegates - they start to rattle and lose boost control. Upgraded wastegate actuators from ARM or Forge solve this. Below 450hp the stock wastegates are fine though.

This is really helpful for planning my build. Quick question - is MHD or a custom tune better for the N54? I see a lot of people using MHD but some say custom tunes are safer.
