Chiptuning box vs proper ECU remap - which is better?

Whats the difference between a plug-in tuning box (like RaceChip) and a proper ECU remap? I know the box is cheaper and easier to install but is it as good? My mechanic says remap is always better but he also sells remaps so... Looking for honest opinions from people who tried both.

ECU remap is always better than a tuning box. The box just modifies sensor signals which can cause issues. A proper remap changes the actual fuel and boost maps in the ECU.

I tried a RaceChip first and then got a proper remap. The remap was noticeably better - smoother power delivery, better throttle response, and more power. The box felt "hacky" in comparison.

tuning box is fine for a budget option tho. not everyone can afford a 500 EUR remap. racechip gave me decent gains on my 320d for 250 EUR
