Classic transfer case issue on xDrive models. The actuator motor inside the transfer case wears out and cant properly distribute torque. Very common on the G01 X3.
The annoying thing is it often doesnt throw persistent codes, just intermittent faults that clear themselves. Ask the dealer to check the transfer case adaptation values in ISTA.
We see this weekly. Its almost always the transfer case actuator. BMW has a technical service bulletin for this.
The fix is either a new transfer case actuator (around 800 EUR parts + labor) or in some cases a full transfer case replacement (2500+ EUR).
Dont ignore it - it will get worse and can leave you stranded.
had this on my X5 F15. same symptoms exactly. turned out to be the transfer case fluid that was never changed. dealer said its "lifetime fill" but thats BS. changed the fluid and the problem went away.
might be worth trying a fluid change first before replacing parts. its like 200 EUR at an indie shop.
Interesting about the fluid change, ill try that first since its cheap. The dealer never mentioned it. Will report back. Thanks all
