Hot take: the B58 is the best engine BMW has ever made. Better than the S54, S65, or any M engine.
Why:
The only downside is it doesnt sound as good as the naturally aspirated M engines. But in terms of overall package, nothing beats it.

Hot take but I agree. The B58 is the most complete engine BMW has ever made. Power, efficiency, reliability - it has everything.
S54 sounds better but the B58 is better in every measurable way. I think nostalgia plays a big role in how we rate older engines.
the B58 doesnt have the soul of an S54 or S65 though. those engines had character. the B58 is clinical perfection but lacks emotion
