N52 (525i, 530i)
- Valve cover gasket / eccentric shaft sensor
- VANOS solenoids
- Electric water pump failure
- Oil filter housing gasket leak
N54 (535i)
- HPFP failure (early models)
- Wastegate rattle
- Injector failure (early index)
- Charge pipe cracking
N62 V8 (545i, 550i)
- Valve stem seal failure — the N62's biggest issue. Blue smoke on startup.
- Coolant pipe leaks — valley pan coolant pipes crack
- Alternator bracket seal — oil leak from behind alternator
- Cost to fix valve stem seals: €3,000-5,000
Chassis Issues
- Front thrust arm bushings — clunking, vague steering
- Rear air suspension failure (if equipped) — air springs leak
- Steering rack leak — power steering fluid leak from rack seals
Electronics
- iDrive CCC failure — screen goes blank, navigation freezes

The E60 Buying Checklist
- Check for oil leaks (valve cover, OFHG, oil pan)
- Listen for VANOS rattle on cold start
- Test all electronics thoroughly
- Check cooling system condition
- N62 V8: Check for blue smoke on startup (valve stem seals)
- Budget for thrust arm bushings if not recently done
