BMW E71 X6 — The Original SAC's Common Problems
BMW E71 X6 — Common Problems
Overview
The E71 X6 (2008-2014) created the "Sports Activity Coupe" segment. It shares most components with the E70 X5.
Engine
N55 (xDrive35i)
- Standard N55 issues
- Best engine choice for reliability
N63 V8 (xDrive50i)
- All the N63 problems — oil consumption, valve stem seals, coolant pipes
- Avoid early N63 (2008-2012)
- N63TU (2012+) is significantly better
S63 V8 (X6 M)
- Rod bearing concerns (less documented than S65 but still a consideration)
- Oil consumption
- Turbo oil line leaks
- Extremely powerful (555 hp) but expensive to maintain
Chassis
- Rear air suspension — same issues as E70 X5
- Transfer case actuator failure
- Front thrust arm bushings
- Active roll stabilization — hydraulic system can leak
X6-Specific
- Rear visibility — the coupe roofline severely limits rear visibility
- Rear headroom — limited for rear passengers
- Tire costs — staggered setup, rear tires are expensive
Electronics
- FRM failure
- CAS module issues
- Comfort access problems
- iDrive CIC failures
Buying Advice
The N55 xDrive35i is the only sensible choice unless you specifically want V8 power. The X6 M is a beast but maintenance costs are extreme. Always check air suspension and transfer case.
