BMW F15 X5 — Common Issues
Overview
The F15 X5 (2013-2018) improved significantly over the E70 in reliability, but still has some common issues.
Engine
N55 (xDrive35i)
- Valve cover / PCV system — same as all N55s
- Electric water pump — 60-100k km
- Oil filter housing gasket
N63TU V8 (xDrive50i)
- Much improved over the original N63
- Still watch for oil consumption (reduced but not eliminated)
- Coolant pipe design improved
- Injectors more reliable
N57 Diesel (xDrive30d, xDrive40d)
- DPF issues with city driving
- EGR valve clogging
- AdBlue system faults (Euro 6 models)
Chassis
Air Suspension
- Still the weak point, though improved over E70
- Air springs last longer but still fail (100-150k km)
- Compressor failure if springs leak
Rear Air Springs
- Most common failure point
- Symptoms: Rear sagging, especially overnight
- Cost: €300-500 per spring
Electronics
Tailgate Actuator
- Power tailgate stops working
- Actuator motor or spindle fails
- Fix: Replace actuator (~€200-400)
Parking Brake Actuator
- Electronic parking brake motor fails
- Symptoms: Parking brake warning, unable to engage/release
- Fix: Replace actuator (~€150-250 per side)
Battery Drain
- Telematics module or Bluetooth module not sleeping
- Symptoms: Dead battery after sitting 2-3 days
- Fix: Identify and update/replace the offending module
Maintenance Tips
- Oil changes every 10,000 km (not BMW's 24k recommendation)
- Air suspension inspection at every service
- Transfer case fluid every 60,000 km
- Brake fluid every 2 years
