BMW F22/F23 2 Series — Known Issues
Overview
The F22 (coupe) and F23 (convertible) 2 Series (2014-2021) is the spiritual successor to the E82 1 Series. It's one of BMW's best modern driver's cars.
Engine Issues

- Timing chain — the big concern, especially 2014-2015 models
- Oil filter housing gasket
- Valve cover gasket
N55 (M235i)
- Valve cover / PCV failure
- Electric water pump
- Oil filter housing gasket
- Very tunable — responds well to Stage 1
B48/B58 (230i, M240i — 2017+ LCI)
- Coolant loss (thermostat housing)
- Generally very reliable
- B58 M240i is the sweet spot — 340 hp, reliable, very tunable
Chassis
- Front control arm bushings — standard BMW wear item
- Rear shock mounts — can creak on rough roads
- Run-flat tires — harsh ride, consider switching to conventional tires
Electronics
- iDrive screen delamination (pre-LCI)
- Occasional Bluetooth connectivity issues
- Comfort access door handle sensor failure
The M2 (F87)
N55 M2 (2016-2018)
- Same N55 issues plus higher stress levels
- Cooling can be marginal on track — consider oil cooler upgrade
S55 M2 Competition (2018-2021)
- Crank hub — must be fixed before any tuning
- Charge pipe cracking
- Oil consumption on some units
- Essentially an M4 engine in a smaller car — incredible performance
