BMW F87 M2 — The Baby M Car's Known Issues
BMW F87 M2 — Known Issues
Overview
The F87 M2 (2016-2021) is BMW's compact M car, available with N55 (original M2) and S55 (M2 Competition/CS).
N55 M2 (2016-2018)
Cooling
- The M2's biggest weakness — cooling system is marginal for track use
- Oil temperature climbs quickly on track
- Coolant temperature can spike
- Essential upgrades for track: Oil cooler, upgraded radiator
Engine
- Standard N55 issues: valve cover/PCV, water pump, OFHG
- Higher stress than standard N55 applications
- Tuning potential: ~400 hp Stage 1, ~450 hp Stage 2
Differential
- Active M differential — electronic LSD
- Actuator motor can fail on high-mileage cars
- Fluid changes every 40-60k km
S55 M2 Competition (2018-2021)
Crank Hub
- Same S55 crank hub issue as M3/M4
- Must be fixed before any tuning
- Non-negotiable preventive maintenance
Charge Pipe
- Stock plastic charge pipe cracks under boost
- Aftermarket aluminum pipe recommended
Oil Consumption
- Some S55 units consume oil
- Monitor level regularly
M2 CS (2020)
- Limited production (2,200 units)
- S55 with 450 hp
- Lighter than Competition (carbon roof, lighter wheels)
- Already appreciating in value
Common to Both
- Rear subframe bushings — can wear with aggressive driving
- Exhaust valve actuator — can fail (no more valve control)
- Run-flat tires — most owners switch to PS4S or RE-71R
The Verdict
The M2 is one of the best M cars ever made. The N55 version is simpler and cheaper to maintain; the S55 Competition is faster but needs the crank hub fix. Both are incredible driver's cars.
