BMW G20 3 Series — Early Issues and What to Watch For
BMW G20 3 Series — Early Issues
Overview
The G20 (2018-present) is BMW's latest 3 Series. Being relatively new, it has fewer documented issues than older generations, but some patterns are emerging.
B48 (320i, 330i)
- Coolant loss — slow coolant loss from thermostat housing or hose connections
- Generally very reliable
- No timing chain issues (unlike N20)
B58 (M340i)
- Coolant loss — same thermostat housing issue as B48
- Charge pipe — can crack on tuned cars
- Otherwise extremely reliable
S58 (M3 G80)
- Oil consumption — some units consume oil
- Charge pipe — cracks under increased boost
- Still too new for long-term reliability data
Chassis & Body
- Rear shock mount noise — some reports of creaking from rear suspension
- Brake squeal — front brakes can squeal, especially in cold/damp conditions
- Run-flat tire noise — run-flat tires are noisier than conventional tires
Electronics
- iDrive software bugs — early software versions had glitches (resolved via OTA updates)
- Wireless CarPlay disconnects — intermittent connection drops
- Digital key issues — iPhone digital key can be unreliable
- Parking assistant glitches — false warnings from parking sensors
What to Watch
The G20 is shaping up to be one of the more reliable 3 Series generations. The B48 and B58 engines are proving to be robust. Main concerns are minor electronics glitches and the coolant loss issue.
Maintenance tip: Don't follow BMW's extended oil change intervals. Change oil every 10,000-12,000 km for longevity.
