BMW paint quality - why is it so bad?

Is it just me or is BMW paint quality terrible? My 2 year old G20 already has stone chips everywhere on the hood and bumper. The paint seems paper thin. My old Toyota had better paint quality than this. For a premium car, BMW should do better. Anyone else frustrated with BMW paint? Is PPF the only solution?

Great list of parts! The N55 engine is a good price at 3500 EUR with only 85k km. GLWS!

BMW switched to water-based paint around 2010 for environmental reasons. Its thinner and softer than the old solvent-based paint. Thats why modern BMWs chip and scratch so easily. The best protection is PPF (paint protection film) on the front end and ceramic coating on the rest. Budget about 1500-2000 EUR for full front PPF. Its expensive but cheaper than repainting.
