BMW Remote Software Upgrade (RSU)
What Is RSU?
BMW Remote Software Upgrade allows your car to receive software updates wirelessly, similar to smartphone updates. Available on G-series BMWs (2018+).
How It Works
- Notification — BMW Connected app or iDrive notifies you of available update
- Download — Update downloads via cellular connection (built-in SIM) or Wi-Fi
- Installation — You confirm installation; car must be parked with engine off
- Duration — Typically 20-30 minutes
- Restart — Car restarts with new software
What Can Be Updated?

- iDrive/head unit software
- Digital instrument cluster
- Driver assistance systems
- Connectivity features
- Navigation maps
Feature Upgrades
- BMW has experimented with subscription-based features
- Heated seats, adaptive cruise control, etc. can be activated remotely
- Controversial — some features require hardware already installed

- iDrive glitches

- Sensor calibration updates
What CANNOT Be Updated OTA
- Engine/transmission software (DME/TCU) — requires dealer visit
- Safety-critical systems (ABS, airbags) — dealer only
- Major module firmware — dealer only
Tips
- Keep your BMW Connected account active
- Connect to Wi-Fi for faster downloads
- Don't interrupt an update in progress
- Check for updates regularly in iDrive settings
- Some updates require a dealer visit to complete installation
Privacy Note
RSU requires your car to have an active cellular connection. BMW collects vehicle data including location, driving patterns, and diagnostic information. You can limit data sharing in the privacy settings, but some connectivity features may be reduced.
