E90 325i oil filter housing gasket leak - DIY or take to shop?

So my 2008 E90 325i (N52 engine) has developed the classic oil filter housing gasket leak. Theres oil dripping down onto the alternator and its making a burning smell. Ive watched a few youtube videos and it looks doable as a DIY but some people say you need special tools. Has anyone here done it themselves? What tools do I need? Also should I do the valve cover gasket at the same time since the car has 180k km? Trying to save some money here

Definitely doable as DIY. You'll need a 36mm socket for the oil filter cap, basic hand tools, and patience. The hardest part is getting the old gasket out cleanly. And YES do the valve cover gasket at the same time. If one is leaking at 180k the other is probably right behind it. The VCG is actually easier to do.

The OFHG on the N52 is straightforward. Maybe 2-3 hours for a first timer. Get the gasket kit from FCP Euro - they have lifetime warranty on parts which is great for BMWs lol. Dont forget to replace the eccentric shaft seal while youre in there. Its right next to the OFHG and its another common leak point on the N52.

Awesome, ordering parts now. FCP Euro is great, used them before for brake pads. Didnt know about the eccentric shaft seal, will add that to the order. Thanks!

one tip - when you pull the oil filter housing off, some coolant will come out because the oil cooler runs through it. have a drain pan ready and dont panic when you see green fluid lol

Did this on my E92 last month. Took me about 4 hours total including the VCG. Saved about $800 compared to the shop quote. Totally worth doing yourself if you have basic mechanical skills.
